Many people will fall in love with rabbits at one point. And another group of people will fall in love with the idea of breeding them.
When I hear people want to breed rabbits, my first question is, "Do you want to breed show quality animals?" A lot of people enjoy the idea of breeding, but haven't thoroughly understood what all is involved; especially to produce show quality animals. There is a lot of heartache, work, and time that goes into producing rabbits.
With so many people breeding rabbits, it is best to produce good quality animals and continually strive to make better animals than you did before, thus improving the breed and your line. It is easy to be caught in the trap of just breeding cute colors and designer breeds to create a cute "pet". If you simply want to breed cute colors together and "see what happens," then you will not be producing top quality rabbits and thus not furthering the breed.
I advise people to think thoroughly on a few things. What kind of rabbits do you want produce? Do you have the funds and the accessibility for good stock? Do you know someone who is an experienced breeder(and willing to mentor you) in your area with the breed you are wanting to involve? Are you okay with handling certain uncomfortable situations that may involve blood, very sick rabbits, and possibly having to do the kind thing and put rabbits down? Can you be objective in evaluating stock- including your own- and be honest in your evaluations?
Please research as much as possible about raising rabbits before starting. Know the terms behind rabbits(does, bucks, kindle, diseases, treatments, etc). There are some things that only experience will teach you, but try your best to be well prepared before actually beginning with breeding.
If you think you truly want to be a breeder, attend a few shows. Speak with breeders. Ask about what stock they have coming available. Explain how you are just starting out and want a good starter kit of rabbits. Many breeders will be happy to talk with you and explain how their breed works.
